The Korte Company has reached another milestone this year as the company turns 50. In 1958, Ralph Korte founded the company without much more than an electric saw and a truck. Building projects for neighbors and friends, the company’s humble start began to pay off in the following years as the company took on larger projects in the area including a printing facility for The Wall Street Journal and a factory and warehousing complex for Nabisco Foods.
The Korte Company was one of the first companies to implement a Design-Build delivery method, twenty years before it was recognized by the rest of the industry. By offering architectural and general contracting services under one roof, The Korte Company was able to deliver projects more efficiently, which translated into cost savings for the client. Today, Design-Build is used by more than 45 percent of the industry.
By 1990, The Korte Company had grown substantially, completing projects not only in the Midwest, but also across the country. Growth continued into the next decade and included projects for the Armed Services, United States Postal Service, Hard Rock Café, Hershey’s, The Walgreens Company and NASA.
Currently, The Korte Company has completed projects in 38 states and averages $270 million annually in construction volume. With offices in Highland, Illinois, St. Louis, Missouri and Las Vegas, Nevada, The Korte Company has grown into a leading Design-Build construction firm.
From design to completion, The Korte Company prides itself on implementing early planning and open communications to provide clients with seamless project delivery. As a result of this complete customer focus, The Korte Company has earned one of the highest customer loyalty ratios in the business with more than 80 percent of its new projects coming from previous customers.
“Throughout our 50 years, we’ve had the opportunity to work with some of the best and brightest people in the industry. Our clients have become friends, and our employees have become family. The foundations that Ralph Korte laid down when he started the company still hold true, and it’s helped shape how we operate today.” stated Todd Korte, president and CEO of The Korte Company.

The church, when completed, will measure 28,678 square feet and will feature an assemblage with a 1,140-seat capacity. The arched ceiling in the main area will reach 62 feet at it’s highest point. The main entrance doors will be a unique feature in themselves as they are being constructed and shipped by their adopted parish in Guatemala. The tilt-up walls will be cast with a split-face block, which will add an architectural dimension to the exterior finish. The 20-acre site also includes a renovated farm house, which the parish has already converted into office space.

The Korte Company recently became a partner in the Midwest RTK Networks with the installation of a Continuously Operating Reference Station (CORS). The networks incorporate Virtual Reference Station (VRS) technology and will include the largest cities in Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Indiana and southern Illinois. The Saint Louis RTK Network covers approximately 3,500 square miles, including eight Missouri and Illinois counties that comprise the St. Louis metropolitan area. VRS technology enables survey measurements on any jobsite within the St. Louis Metro area with sub-centimeter accuracy. It also eliminates the need for crews to set up and secure a local base near the site and can be operated by a single technician with a cell phone and rover. This will not only provide state-of-the-art survey technology for The Korte Company, but has also provided expanded network coverage for other GPS users in the St. Louis area.
According to Mark Grinter, Professional Land Surveyor at The Korte Company, “This system provides our survey crews instant access to the most accurate data available. The system allows us substantial savings in time and personnel needed to accurately map a site and provide positioning control for construction”.
“This is just another step we’ve taken in utilizing the technologies available to ensure we’re delivering the best end product to our clients,” added Todd Korte, president and CEO of The Korte Company.

The Korte Company has been awarded a project for Walgreen Co., the nation’s largest drugstore chain. Construction is planned to begin early this Summer in Windsor, Connecticut. When completed, the 770,000 square foot distribution center will eventually employ 550 workers. When the facility goes on-line in 2008, it is expected to serve approximately 275 stores in New England and New York. The facility will be equipped with the newest technology in automated storage and retrieval systems, as well as sophisticated sorting and high storage rack systems.
In addition, a number of special features that have been designed specifically for this project, including adjustable work stations and redesigned, easier to use computer screens, will allow for the employment of disabled employees. “Like the distribution center we’ll open next year in Anderson, S.C., our goal for this facility is to have one-third of the workforce made up of disabled employees working side-by-side with other team members,” said Randy Lewis, Walgreens senior vice president of distribution and logistics. “We’re doing this because it’s the right thing to do. Seventy percent of adults with disabilities – and 95 percent of people with autism – will never be offered a job. I believe we can, and will, make a difference for many of them.”

The Korte Company recently established the Ralph Korte Endowment Scholarship for students entering into the Construction Management program at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. The award is designed to assist those interested in the construction field who otherwise would have difficulty obtaining a degree.
The scholarship also honors Ralph Korte, who founded The Korte Company in 1958, and is retiring after 50 years of service. According to daughter and Controller at The Korte Company Susan Bowman, “He has always been a big proponent of SIUE, in general, and education and construction, and giving back to the community. This is another way of giving back. This scholarship combines all of Ralph's passions and is another way of giving back.”
Through the Ralph F. Korte Scholarship Endowment for Construction Management, interest earnings from the balance of the gift will be used to award a scholarship each year. The scholarships will cover the cost of tuition and provide students an opportunity to work toward obtaining a valuable degree and providing a competitive edge in the workforce.
Awards will be administered through the SIUE School of Engineering's Construction Management program and the SIUE Foundation.
"Ultimately this scholarship is to be awarded first and foremost on the basis of need," said Patrick Hundley, SIUE's vice chancellor for University Relations. "Recipients of this award should exhibit need to the point of not being able to attend college without this award."
The scholarship was presented by Vaughn Vandegrift, Chancellor of SIUE, on October 23rd at The Pageant in St. Louis, Missouri during a 50th Anniversary Celebration for The Korte Company.
