Hangar 6 and 9 renovation (251-B) – Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, WA

The Korte Company was awarded a contract at the Naval Air Station Whidbey Island in Washington through the Naval Facilities Engineering Command. The project included the Design-Build construction of two hangar facility extensions, Hangar 6 and Hangar 9.

The Hangar 6 extension included a 7,000-square-foot addition to both of the two existing maintenance bays in Hangar 6 and complete modernization of the 190,000-square-foot Hangar 6 facility to accommodate four P-8A aircraft and squadrons. As part of the modernization and reorganization of Hangar 6, the design of the facility met and/or exceeded current building specifications, including Anti-Terrorism and Force Protection and Architectural Barriers Act requirements.

The scope of work included the demolition of the existing finishes as well as the modernization of heating, ventilation and air conditioning, electrical systems, and interior finishes which included walls, paint, flooring, and fixtures. The hangar was also updated to the current seismic code.

Maintenance shop spaces, maintenance administration offices and building support spaces on the first floor were reorganized and upgraded. Newly constructed classrooms and training facilities were added to the mezzanine level.

The Hangar 9 extension allowed the facility to fully enclose P-3C aircraft during the construction period and provided clear space requirements needed to accommodate the aircraft. After construction was complete, the addition was removed and Hangar 9 was restored to its original condition.
