Kilauea Military Camp renovation

At The Korte Company, we deliver eye-catching resort construction. From Florida to Hawaii, we’ve built some of the most complete and relaxing resorts in the country. This is a resort for military — active and retired.

Located in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Kilauea Military Camp (KMC) sits amidst spectacular scenery, natural wonders and cultural treasures, including the marvels of the active Kilauea Volcano.

The restoration of Kilauea Military Camp was awarded under an Indefinite Delivery, Indefinite Quantity contract with the Department of the Army through its Morale, Welfare and Recreation Department. This camp, which housed Japanese and Italian prisoners during World War II, underwent a complete renovation.

The project included the renovation of seven existing cabins, the cafeteria, lounge, an administration building, dormitory and retail store. Many of the tastefully decorated cabins have kitchens and Jacuzzis, and all have cable TV and baseboard heating. Site work included new concrete walkways, handicap ramps, drainage improvements and exterior lighting.

While Kilauea Military Camp occupies about 50 acres of the park’s 300,000-plus acres, its history is as old as Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, as it was established in the same year, 1916.

It began as a simple idea by Hilo Board of Trade members as a training ground for the National Guard and an Army vacation and health recruiting station. And now, it’s become one of Hawaii’s most unique resorts for the military. KMC is open to all active and retired military, members of the Reserve and National Guard, active and retired Department of Defense civilian employees including Coast Guard Civilians, dependents and sponsored guests.
