Winder Fulton Medical Dental Clinic – Fort Lewis, WA

The Korte Company was selected as the Design-Builder for the new Winder Fulton multi-specialty clinic located near Tacoma, Washington.

The single-story clinic was originally conceived by the client as a two-story clinic located on a wooded site with a steep grade change. But the proposed two-story program conflicted with the desire for highly accessible and convenient on-site care and drove the project cost over budget. Our team of architects, engineers and constructors devised a single-story solution that simplified the project and ultimately delivered a best-value solution.

The multi-specialty medical and dental clinic houses three separate functions: medical clinics, dental clinics and ancillary clinics, including physical therapy, radiology, lab and pharmacy. We developed the layout of these functional interior spaces around a parallel corridor system, allowing patients and providers to move and interact freely. These corridors extend to the exterior walls, allowing the clinic to seamlessly expand in the near future. At the ends of these corridors, our team developed light wells using translucent wall panels. With this layout, bright natural light shines through the interior clinical space to warm the room and deliver a sustainable design solution.

Exterior materials promote a cohesive community context, matching the look and feel of the facility with the surrounding architecture. All the materials selected for the exterior skin represent a durable, low-maintenance palette and offer the most consistent appearance with minimal effort over time.

We’re particularly proud this project is one of the first commissioned by the U.S. Army to earn a LEED Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. And it meets all Unified Facilities Criteria 4-010-01 Anti-Terrorism and Force Protection requirements.
