354th Medical Group – Eielson Air Force Base, AK

As a primary-care comprehensive clinic, providing outpatient-managed health care to serve eligible beneficiaries living in the Eielson area, the 354th Medical Group Health Clinic is a vital component of Eielson Air Force Base.

When the existing roof and building envelope began to fail, The Korte Company and their joint-venture partner were tasked with a major renovation project that had to be coordinated with the short Alaskan summer.

The Korte team developed a plan to replace the existing protected membrane roof through a phased removal and salvage operation that limited interior spaces to the elements. Replacement of the roof membrane and gaskets occurred simultaneously and required existing equipment to be raised and reinstalled. Wall and soffit panels were cleaned, primed and repainted.

The fire detection system was replaced with a new wire system and intelligent devices. The new devices were activated as the project progressed and the zones of the facility were completed. All work was accomplished around the working hours of the clinic, as well as during nights and weekends to avoid conflict with operations of the facility.

The project also included the replacement of six existing air handlers located in the crawlspace of the existing clinic, each sequenced to occur during weekends and summer months to minimize the impact to the clinic and eliminate the need for temporary heat. Each unit was sized to accommodate a 5% increase in capacity. Data Device Corporation (DDC) controls were provided to connect the new air handling units to the existing building DDC system.
