F-35 Aircraft Maintenance Hangar – Luke Air Force Base, AZ

The Korte Company was awarded the F-35 Maintenance Hangar, located at Luke Air Force Base. As part of the overall Joint Strike Fighter Program complex, the new hangar has been assigned to facilitate maintenance operations for the F-35 Lightning II jets.

Luke Air Force Base officially changed its mission to include training for the F-35’s, and by 2024 Luke Air Force Base plans to house 144 of the F-35 aircraft. In addition to the new planes, Luke will also host pilots from around the world, marking a new era for the base, which was originally commissioned in 1941.

The 18,740-square-foot facility features a drive-thru, four-position aircraft maintenance bay for F-35 aircraft. Additional spaces include a tool room, break room, toilet rooms and a janitor closet. Mechanical, electrical, fire protection and communication equipment will also be included.

The building design further establishes a public presence along Fighter Country Avenue by clearly defining pedestrian and vehicular entry points for circulation/life safety. Through the appropriate use of massing, materials, detailing and colors, the facility will complement the natural landscape and existing built-up environment.

Throughout the process, the design concept and approach will comply with the most current regulations, standards and codes as well as adhering to the Luke Air Force Base Architectural Compatibility Guide.
