Poor Clare Monastery

The Korte Company completed the original 17,725-square-foot chapel and residence for Poor Clare Monastery of Our Lady of Mercy in 1989. Located in Belleville, Illinois, the two-story facility and chapel have long served the resident sisters.

The circular-shaped chapel was designed to be partitioned and effectively separates the public space from the private prayer area. The unique design of the facility is symbolic and represents the deep religious connection between the monastery and its faith.

The cross-shaped wing attached to the chapel contains bedrooms, restroom facilities, a kitchen and a dining area for the sisters. Adjacent to the facility, The Korte Company constructed a monument area and concrete walking path which directly mirrors the design of the chapel.

Throughout the years, The Korte Company has worked closely with Poor Clare to provide necessary improvements and renovations. Subsequent projects included a 4,000-square-foot addition to the living quarters, a new bell tower, infirmary and prep kitchen. The basement area was renovated to include craft and sewing areas as well as additional storage. Improvements to the chapel included a new skylight that was constructed and installed on site.
