Cole Winkeler: Learning on the job and building what matters

“My hope is that by the end of the summer, I learn new things, gain new experience and knowledge, and I’m smarter than I was at the beginning of it.”
— Cole Winkeler, Architect Intern

From familiar roots to real responsibility

Cole Winkeler didn’t have to look far for an architecture internship this summer.

As a Highland-area local and student at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, he’d always known about The Korte Company. But now, he’s seen firsthand what that name means — not just in reputation, but in action.

Having grown up around construction, Cole thought he knew what to expect. But even with his background, nothing can fully prepare a student for the pace and pressure of helping bring a real project to life.

In the thick of it from day one

As an architect intern, Cole didn’t just dip his toe into the industry — he dove in headfirst.

From reviewing construction documents to detailing complex models, he was trusted with work that demanded focus, accuracy and quick thinking.

“There was a project at the beginning of my internship which I didn’t know much about, and I was kind of just tossed into the fire on it,” he said. “It ended up working out pretty well.”

This hospital addition project required detailed site modeling on a tight timeline. It was a crash course in delivering under pressure, staying adaptable and supporting the team.

The people who make it matter

For Cole, the job is rewarding, but the people make it memorable.

Whether he’s learning from experienced architects or getting feedback from project managers, he’s surrounded by a team that’s invested in helping him grow and succeed. That kind of camaraderie turns everyday work into lifelong memories. It made learning the job easier and a lot more fun.

Cole learned how to bring an idea to life by collaborating with project managers, architects and contractors. He had to about the things that matter most, like when to ask questions or step up to lead.

That’s what it means to Build Smart — learning how to design and build together.

Growing into the work

Each day at The Korte Company pushed Cole to take on ever bigger challenges.

And he always stepped up.

Tight timelines, real projects and real teamwork have given him a foundation that will last well beyond this summer.

Cole left the internship with sharper skills and a better sense of the architect he wants to become.
