The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) has recognized this Design-Build school construction project in California for its sustainability and assigned it a USGBC LEED Certified Gold designation. The facility helps before and after school program leaders provide students a positive learning and activity environment on Vandenberg Air Force Base. We designed and built the structure, aligning it with the visual characteristics of the Air Force Base and providing complete functionality.
The Child Development Center at Vandenberg Air Force Base is a 23,390-square-foot facility that features an open-air canopy extending from the main entrance. The arched entrance opens into a two-story lobby with high, clerestory windows that bring natural light into the entrance hall and lobby. We designed a transition to the roof eave with Stucco accent bands and surrounds.
In keeping with the Vandenberg Facilities Excellence Standards, the aesthetics of the building reflect the California Mission Revival style and are conducive to the building’s residential character. For materials, we used a mixture of exposed block, stucco and Spanish style concrete roof tiling. Arched openings and engaged columns complete the architectural design.
Interior color choices create a warm and neutral scheme with the intent to provide an environment that’s welcoming, fun, energetic and safe. We selected the floor and wall covering materials used throughout the facility for both their visual appeal and durability.
