The Korte Company worked closely with the City of Highland, Illinois and the Highland-Pierron Fire Department to design and construct the 9,822-square-foot design-build facility located in Highland, Illinois.
The Highland-Pierron Fire Protection District is a volunteer department located in the Midwest National Fire Protection Association region and headquartered in Highland, Illinois.
The new firehouse, located on 5 acres, features approximately 2,921 square feet of meeting and office space as well as a full kitchen, storage space, training areas and bathroom facilities.
Four double deep, drive-through apparatus bays provide a 6,901-square-foot service area for the emergency vehicles stationed at the facility. The 18-foot-high bays provide direct access to the work room, hose rack drying area, equipment storage, restroom, laundry and mezzanine. The apparatus bay exit driveway was designed separately from parking access to eliminate traffic congestion and provide rapid response access for emergency vehicles.
The building’s exterior provides a distinguished facade that complements the surrounding residential neighborhood. The highly aesthetic, low maintenance and durable building envelope is comprised of integral color split face and smooth face load-bearing concrete block.
Extensive site work included more than 40 trees and 80 shrubs as part of the landscape design. Enhanced landscape areas were installed at the building’s main entry, monument sign and flag pole.
