In September 2020, Hurricane Sally caused extensive wind and flood damage across NAS Pensacola, including Building 603, a historically significant, four-story, 262,941-square-foot masonry structure originally constructed in 1937 with a major 1942 expansion.
As part of Hurricane Sally Recovery Package 4, The Korte Company completed comprehensive restoration and modernization of the facility, which serves as the installation’s network administration building. Given its historic designation, all exterior repairs were closely coordinated with and approved by the Florida State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) to ensure compliance with preservation requirements.
The project included selective demolition and structural repairs to storm-damaged roof, penthouse, masonry, and canopy systems, along with extensive exterior envelope restoration, roofing replacement, and construction of a new mechanical enclosure designed to match adjacent historic structures. Major mechanical upgrades included new cooling towers, pumps with variable frequency drives, upgraded piping systems, and fully automated building controls.
Fire protection, life safety, and electrical systems were fully replaced or upgraded, including a new fire alarm system and relocation of a generator above flood elevation to enhance resiliency. Through careful planning and execution, Korte successfully restored Building 603’s functionality while preserving its historic character and improving long-term reliability.
