The University of Nevada, Las Vegas partnered with The Korte Company to renovate unused space inside the Paul McDermott Physical Education Building, converting an 800-square-foot racquetball court into the Human Capability Lab — a purpose-built biomechanics research space for the Department of Physical Therapy.

Completed in the fall of 2025, the renovation included complete interior demolition, new mechanical and electrical systems, LED lighting, raised flooring for precision-mounted force plates, and integrated camera rails to support advanced motion-capture and performance-analysis technology. A new air-handling unit above the mezzanine corridor improved environmental control, while acoustical treatments and vibration isolation created the quiet, stable conditions required for accurate research.

The Korte Company provided preconstruction, cost, and schedule management to ensure the project met both budget and timeline goals.

The result is a compact, high-performance environment that advances UNLV’s biomechanics and human performance research — helping faculty and students analyze movement, improve rehabilitation methods, and expand the understanding of how the body works.

From design assistance to final turnover, The Korte Company helped the university build a smarter space for smarter science.
